Abstract
1321886 Coated TiO 2 NATIONAL LEAD CO 2 July 1970 [3 July 1969 20 April 1970] 32270/70 Heading C1N Pigmentary TiO 2 is coated with hydrated Al silicate, preferably 4À5-20% by wt. of the TiO 2 , and optionally with up to 2% of porous hydrated Al 2 O 3 , by maintaining an aqueous slurry of TiO 2 at a pH of 8À5-10À5 and at a temperature of from 70‹ C. to its b.pt, simultaneously adding solutions of salts of Si and Al (e.g. Na silicate, Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ) in a SiO 2 : Al 2 O 3 wt. ratio of 2 : 1 to 8 : 1 to precipitate Al silicate at a rate not greater than 10% per hr. on a TiO 2 wt. basis, and ageing the slurry at a pH of 7À0-10À5; a further Al silicate coating, and/or a porous hydrated Al 2 O 3 coating is then provided (the latter by lowering the pH to 5À0-5À5, adding Na aluminate or Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and then adjusting the pH to 7-8). The pigment may be dried and milled before and after the Al 2 O 3 coating. Drying may be effected at 120-350‹ C. or up to 500‹ C. for Al 2 O 3 , followed by steam fluid energy milling using a steam : pigment ratio of 3 : 1 to 5 : 1.
