Abstract

1321651 Electro-photography XEROX CORP 30 June 1970 [3 July 1969 23 April 1970] 31617/70 Heading G2H In a cyclic xerographic process using a drum having a photo-conductive surface and a powder developer comprising toner and carrier particles, the developer contains a polymeric cleaning additive of smaller particle size (0.05-30 microns) than the toner, of critical surface tension at least 2 dynes/cm less than the toner, having a Rockwell hardness of at least 10, being more electronegative than sulphur in the tribo-electric series and being employed in a proportion of 0.05-15% based on the toner. The critical surface tension of the toner may be greater than 24 dynes/cm and that of the additive may be less than 33 dynes/ cm. The developer may also contain zinc stearate. The additive may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or fluoride, polyvinylidine chloride or fluoride, polytetrafluoroethylene, or polychlorotrifluoroethylene, or a co-polymer or mixture of polymers. Toners, colourants and carriers are specified. In the examples the toner is styrene/butyl methacrylate polymer or fumaric acid/2, 2-bis(4-hydroxyisopropoxy-phenyl)propane polyester, the colourant is carbon black, the carrier is steel core beads, and cleaning is effected with a polyurethane cleaning blade.
