Abstract

1321506 Administering eye medicament D M MAURICE 11 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970 10 Feb 1971] 37784/71 Heading A5R A dispenser 10 for introducing liquid medicament into a patients' eye comprises a nozzle 12 for containing a dose of liquid medicament, a device 24 for expelling the dose from the nozzle, an energy storage system 35, and means 26, 27, 37 for rapidly releasing energy stored by the system to actuate the expelling device. The dispenser, preferably formed of a transparent plastics material, is provided at one end with an eye-cup 11. The nozzle 12 is connected to a transverse passage 13 having a hollow needle 14 pointed at its lower end 15 to enable puncturing of a plug 23 so that medicament may pass upwards through the needle when a cap 20 is screwed tight. Before application of a dose, a button 37 is pulled away from the dispenser and rotated so that a slot 26 disengages from a spline 27, whereby disc 25 is held in the position illustrated in Figure 1, thus releasing the spring 35. Further rotation of the cap causes more medicament to enter nozzle 12 as required. In another embodiment, Figure 2 (not shown), a mirror may be used for the patient to direct the nozzle, and hence medicament, into his own eye. A coil (81) surrounds the nozzle (80) for heating the medicament to blood temperature. At the same time a coil (87) in a chamber (86) heats a volume of air to a predetermined temperature at which a valve (88) opens and the release of air from said chamber projects the medicament from the nozzle into the patient's eye.
