Abstract
1321247 Sodium antimonate flame retardant M & T CHEMICALS Inc 1 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 46795/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] Sodium antimonate having a particle size of 0À1-8 Á (average 1À5 Á) and a S.A. of 2À5 Î 10<SP>7</SP> cm.<SP>2</SP>/gm. is obtained by size reducing sodium antimonate having a particle size in the range 2-45 Á (8 Á average) and a S.A. of 2À5 Î 10<SP>4</SP> cm.<SP>2</SP>/gm. by any wet or dry means and then forming an aqueous slurry of the reduced particles and adjusting the pH of the slurry to 6À8-7À0. The pH may be adjusted using a mineral acid, a carboxylic acid or a partially neutralized difunctional acid, e.g. chlorendic, acetic, phosphoric acid or ammonium acid phosphate. The antimonate may be employed as a flame retardant in resins, containing a halogen source. The resin may be a polyolefin, polyester, polyvinyl chloride, a copolymer of polyvinylchloride or a plastisol.
