Abstract

1319698 Strengthening expanded metal beams JURY & SPIERS Pty Ltd 28 July 1971 [31 July 1970] 35560/71 Headings E1K and E1W An expanded metal beam, of the kind in which diagonal struts 36 are formed by deformation of portions of a web of a generally I section bar of ductile metal, e.g. aluminium, after piercing the web with at least two longitudinal rows of longitudinal slots such that the slots in adjacent rows overlap, is strengthened by securing load-transmitting members between the chords 32 or flanges 31. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, load-transmitting members 40 consist of pieces of timber (Fig. 3, not shown) which have grooves (41) to accommodate those portions of struts 36 joined to the chords and which are inserted horizontally in the diamond-shaped openings 43 and rotated to the position shown where they are secured. In place of members 40, similarly inserted members 45 of tubular steel which are secured to the chords by bolts (46, Fig. 4, not shown) may be used. In the embodiment of Fig. 7, the load-transmitting members are in the form of panels 62 which are located on opposite sides of the diagonal struts, which in this embodiment are reinforced by a flange 60, the panels being located in grooves formed by ribs 61 on the upper and lower flanges 58, 59 of the beam, by springing the flanges 58, 59 apart sufficiently to allow the panels to be inserted in the grooves. In a further embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown) the load-transmitting members are each formed by two pieces of timber bolted together, the pieces being arranged on opposite sides of the expanded web. In addition, the chords are strengthened by further pieces of timber arranged longitudinally in troughs formed by bent-up edge portions of the flanges 31.
