Abstract
1319262 Feeding record tapes ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc 17 Aug 1970 39620/70 Heading G5R Tape 10 is transported by a capstan 30 past a head 125 carrying one or more transducers T and between two rolls 12, 22 whose centres move towards and away from the capstan in accordance with the changes in their diameters, the capstan 30 being driven by a reversible motor 38 whose output shaft 115 is coupled to a resonant damper 120, 122, 123 arranged to minimize changes in rotational velocity at normal motor speed. Selective energization of two torque motors 60, 70 ensures that whichever tape roll is acting as take-up roll is pressed against the capstan 30, that both rolls are so pressed during braking, and that both rolls are clear of the capstan when the system is at rest. Reversal of the tape drive is effected either by means of manual switches (94, 96), Fig. 6 (not shown), or automatically near the end of a tape run by means of switches 95, 97. As the drive motor 38 slows down preparatory to reversing, a speed-sensitive centrifugal device 110 allows a switch 103 to close, energizing a solenoid 135 which steps a cam 130 to shift the head 125 to the next track or tracks. The speed-sensitive switch 103 is used also as an interrupter to control slow running of the drive motor 38, e.g. during tape threading.
