Abstract
1318578 Rotary shears HALLDEN MACHINE CO 22 July 1970 35408/70 Heading B3W Rotary shears comprise a frame 22, shear drums 26, 28, pairs of end bearings 38, 44, shear blades 30, 32 mounted against shoulders 140, 142 and 140a and 142a machined in the respetive drums, a drive connection 66, 68 etc. for maintaining the blades in cutting relation, means for adjusting each end bearing of one of the bearing pairs in directions transverse to the axis of the respective drum and including movernent to and from the axis of the other drum and means for locking the end bearing(s) in adjusted position. The upper drum is fixed and the lower drum is associated with a mild cut device comprising eccentrics 48 and followers 54 pivotably mounted in the lower drum bearings 44 which are pivoted to the frame at (46) (Figs. 2 and 3) and have return springs 56. To adjust the lower drum toward and away from the upper drum eccentric studs 102 on which the followers 54 rotate are angularly adjusted and locked in adjusted position. To adjust the drum 26 in the horizontal direction each pivot (46) is rotated to adjust the angularity of an eccentric portion thereof on which the bearing rests and is locked in adjusted position by a plug (96), Fig. 4 (not shown), in a bore in the frame which is tightened against the pivot by a screw (100). To set the final cutting clearance the upper drum shaft 36 is slid to the left in Fig. 1 so that the helical meshing teeth on gears 66, 68 co-operate to cam the drums into relative rotation and achieve the desired clearance which may be nil. The blades are preferably helical and are readily removable for sharpening, the opposed surfaces 84 and 86 being machined to renew the cutting edge and holes 152, 152a for blade mounting bolts being elongated to accommodate the differing positions of the holes relative to tapped holes 156, 156a in the frame after machining. The blades may have hard inserts such as 180, 182 at two diagonally opposite edges, the mounting holes being spaced equally from these edges so that the blades can be reversed.
