Abstract
1317814 Vibration-damped laminates E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 14 May 1970 23433/70 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C3 and F2] In a vibration damped structure, a base panel and constraining sheet are bonded together by an interlayer comprising (i) an acidic copolymer having a saturated carbon chain, part of which is substituted by carboxylic acid groups, and (ii) a viscoelastic polymer having a loss tangent of at least 0À5 at -20 to +80 C. and 20-20,000 cps. The interlayer is a dispersion of the viscoelastic polymer (e.g. as granules, flakes or fibres) in the acidic copolymer, which dispersion may be used in sheet or fluid form, or is a laminate comprising the viscoelastic polymer bonded between two sheets of acidic copolymer. The acidic copolymer may be a copolymer of ethylene and 5-25 wt. per cent (based on the total copolymer) of α- unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g. acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric; up to 50% of the acid groups may be neutralized by metal ions. The viscoelastic polymer may be an ethylene copolymer rubber, SBR, polyisobutylene, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, butyl rubber, chloroprene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, nitrile rubber, butadiene/styrene, actylonitrile/ methacrylic acid, silicone rubber or polyurethane; particularly preferred are ethylene-propylene rubbers and pre-cured polyurethanes obtained by reacting an aromatic diisocyanate of MW up to 300 with (1) polypropylene ether glycol of average MW 750-2500, and (2) and aliphalic dial or triol, of MW below 350, sufficient to react with 70-100% of the residual NCO groups. Interlayers containing 10-80 wt. per cent of such polyurethanes are particularly useful as adhesives. Such polyurethanes are disclosed in Specification 1,119,067. Bonding.-The interlayer may be used for bonding metal, e.g. steel, aluminium, copper, bronze, to metal, glass or wood, by heating the assembly under pressure to melt the interlayer. Examples describe the bonding of steel sheets, of the same or different thicknesses.
