1317733 Coating ARMSTRONG CORK CO 22 May 1970 [23 May 1969] 24836/70 Heading B2E Decorative surface coverings are produced by applying a plastisol to a backing sheet to form a plastisol layer of given thickness, then distributing uniformly a quantity of given thickness chips to the upper surface of the plastisol, heating to change the viscosity of the plastisol and permit the rapid settling of the chips into the plastisol until they come into close proximity with the backing sheet, the ratio of the quantity of plastisol per unit area to. the quantity of chips per unit area being chosen such that either the chips are partially submerged or completely submerged within the plastisol. Suitable backing materials are sheets of woven fabric and impregnated felted fibres, sheets of thermoplastic or elastomeric resinous compositions. The chips may be broken down sheet stock comprising polyvinyl chloride, plasticizer and stabilizers. The plastisol may comprise polyvinyl chloride, plasticizers and stabilizers. As shown in Figure 1 web 2 of backing material is fed past nozzle 4 depositing a layer of plastisol 6. Alternatively, dispensing apparatus 4 can be a roller coater. A hopper 8 distributes the chips 10 uniformly on the upper surface of the plastisol layer (alternatively dispensing apparatus 8 could be a stencil type of dispenser). Heating means 12 causes the chips to sink into the plastisol. Planishing can also be used to force the chips into the plastisol layer. The structures may be used as floor coverings.
