Abstract
1317253 Hydraulic shock-absorbers MITCHELL HYDRAULICS Ltd 15 July 1970 [15 April 1969] 19267/69 Heading F2S An hydraulic piston-cylinder shock-absorber, particularly for use in pipe-supporting systems, allows free movement under slowly changing forces (e.g. thermal expansion) but becomes substantially rigid under shock loading in either direction. This effect is achieved by fitting, within an axial passage 56 in the piston 50, a pair of spring-loaded valves 68 each of which is urged by a respective spring 66 away from a valve seating 60 in the passage 56. Both valves are normally open, but the leading one closes if the piston is subjected to shock loading. The valve elements 62 each have an axial bleed passage (not shown) and the gap between them communicates with a second through-piston passage 80 containing a pair of overload relief valves constituted by two balls 84 acted on by a spring 86 disposed between them. The cylinder communicates via a valve 90 with a reservoir 92 which is maintained under pressure by a spring- loaded piston 102. The reservoir has a filling valve 96 and the rod 108 of the reservoir piston has a graduated extension 110 to indicate the state of filling. The latter may alternatively be signalled electrically. A dummy piston rod 17 is fitted to the end of the piston opposite the load-carrying piston rod 16, to equalize the loaded area of the two piston faces. The external reservoir shown may be replaced by one located inside the dummy piston rod. Both the cylinder and the piston rod 16 have "spade-type" end connectors 10.
