Abstract

1317226 Cutting apparatus JOHN DUSENBERY CO Inc 11 Nov 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 54453/70 Heading B4B A method of severing a strip of material 162 trailing from a reel 160 of such material wound on a core in a turret 10 winding machine comprises indexing the turret to bring a new core 12 into the winding station, moving a backing member 28 into a position behind one surface of the strip between new core and the raised core, moving a score knife 84 mounted on a knife carriage 50 into impingement with the other surface of the strip and effecting movement of the knife carriage transversely of the line of movements of the strip to effect severing of the strip. The backing member is in the form of an elongated strip extending the length of the core reels and mounted on a bar 24 attached to arms 14 pivotally mounted at each side of the machine; the arms are connected to the piston rod 18 of a pneumatically or hydraulically actuated ram so that the backing member can be moved to an inoperative position when the strip is being wound on to the core 12. The backing member is locked in the operative position shown in Fig. 1, by means of piston rods (38, Fig. 5, not shown), engaging in holes (44) in the arms 14. A number of disc knives 84 are freely rotatable on the carriage 50 which is reciprocably mounted on a base 52 connected at each end with brackets 56a, 56b; the brackets are slidable in slots 48 formed in the side walls of the machine in order that the carriage can be moved to an inoperative position. The carriage is guided by means of rollers 74, 82, Fig. 2 and 58, Fig. 4 and is reciprocated by a pneumatic ram 60. The disc knives are each mounted on dove-tail slides 96 loaded by springs 104. A brush carriage 54 is mounted for transverse movement relative to the carriage 50, the brush carriage being guided by rollers 118, 120 and loaded by springs 128, Fig. 2. A tape roll-on mechanism is provided and includes a roller 146 rotatably mounted in brackets 144 and movable to an inoperative position against the action of springs 152 by means of a pneumatic cylinder 132. In operation of the machine after a reel has been wound with material e.g. adhesive tape, it is raised on the turret to the position shown at 160, Fig. 1 and an empty core is mounted in the position 12, Fig. 1. The backing member 28 is then moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the carriage support 52 moved down the slots 48 until the kives contact the material supported on the backing member. During this movement projections 108 on the brush carriage 54 contact a member 26, Fig. 1, thereby moving the brush carriage to the position shown in Fig. 1 against the action of the springs 128, Fig. 2. The ram 60 is then actuated to cause the knives to sever the material. The cylinder 132 is then actuated so that the roller 146 wraps over the leading end of the material on to the new cores. The backing member 28 is moved away thereby allowing the brush carriage to move forwardly under the action of the springs 128 so that the brushes 110 wrap the trailing end of the material around the completed reel.
