Abstract

1317109 Carrier bags F M C CORP 19 April 1971 [8 April 1970] 25692/71 Heading A4G [Also in Division B5] A thermoplastic web W, Fig. 1 folded along its longitudinal centre line is fed intermittently from a roll WR through creasing rolls 32a - d and web folding devices for folding the longitudinal edges WE, Figs. 2, 3, (not shown) to produce lips having two, (Fig.2) or three, Fig.3 (not shown) web layers, through web tensioning apparatus 36, through carrier bag making apparatus 38 for simultaneously making hand-receiving cut-outs H, Fig. 5, and longitudinal line seals LS in the lips and through a reciprocating seal bar 42 and an intermittently rotating seal roll 44 to produce transverse welds and cuts. The apparatus 38, Fig.6, comprises outwardly biased stripper plates 204, 206 for separating the web lips, stationary heatable seal bars 192, 194 and cutting dies 198 between the plates 204, 206 and reciprocable platens 76, 78 for pressing the lips into contact with the seal bars 192, 194 and cutting dies 198. Platen 76 is driven by a cam 94 through a plunger 72, rocker bars 128 coupling plunger 72 to a plunger 74 on platen 78 to drive the latter, plunger 74 being biased upwardly by a spring 116. The pressure applied by the platens 76, 78 can be adjusted by screws 136, 160. The bag making operation may be interrupted for one cycle after a predetermined bag count, and during interruption for more than one cycle, the seal bars 192, 194 and cutting dies 198 are pivoted 90 degrees out of the web path, the platens 76, 78 are prevented from reciprocating and bar 42 and roll 44 are made inoperative. The seal bars 192, 194 and cutting dies 198 are pivoted by a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 184 that causes rotation of a shaft (170), Fig. 12, (not shown) rigid with parts 192, 194, 198 through a rack 190 and a spur gear 174. The platens 76, 78 are prevented from reciprocating by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder (222), Figs. 8, 9, (not shown) mounted on a wall (221) of platen 78, a nut (234) on the piston rod (228), when extended, abutting a plate (138) of platen 76. The web portions cut out by the dies 198 are removed by a vacuum motor through passages 249, 241, 257, 251, elbows 243, (253), Fig. 11, (not shown) and hoses 245, (255). In a modification, the dies may produce cut outs H2, H1, Figs.5A, 4A, (not shown) that are retained by tabs (T2, T1) and a line (260), or by a line (274), Fig.4, (not shown). The bag may be locked by passing one of these cut-outs through aperture provided by the other. Specifications 1267720 and 1315154 are referred to.
