Abstract
1316266 Electro-plating fibres GLACIER METAL CO Ltd 2 July 1970 [10 July 1969] 34852/69 Heading C7B [Also in Division F2] A lined backing member e.g. for use in a bearing, is made by winding a fibre in successive turns over a face of a strip of material, each turn having a portion extending across the face, plating the exposed face and fibre and severing the fibres adjacent the edge of the face. Preferably several strips 10 (e.g. of steel) are fed through an electro-plating bath 19 through slots 15 in a guide plate 17 which serves as an electrical contact for the strips. As the strips proceed through the bath they are coated e.g. with lead/tin, lead/ indium, nickel, copper, chromium, iron, gold, silver, platinum or an alloy of these metals. Fibre 11 (e.g. carbon fibre) is wound around the strips by a rotary bobbin feed 13. The fibre and strips are plated as the strips continue through the bath. The fibres between the strips are cut by a device 21 and the strips are wound onto spools, which may be arranged in a ring if the strips are not sufficiently flexible to be turned on to parallel spools.
