Abstract
1315747 Friction clutches GENERAL MOTORS CORP 19 April 1971 [6 Feb 1970] 21038/71 Heading F2C [Also in Division F1] A temperature-controlled clutch between a driving pulley 18 and an engine cooling fan hub 13 comprises an expansible temperature sensitive element 35 in direct heat-conducting contact with the shaft 10 of a water impeller. As shown, expansion of the temperature sensitive element 35 moves segmental shoes 26, 27 radially outwardly into frictional engagement with a drum 22 on the fan hub 13. One contraction of the temperature sensitive element 35 the segments 26, 27 are moved radially inwards by return springs (31, 32). The segments 26, 27 are carried by a disc 14 fast with the water impeller shaft 10 and driving pulley 18. In Fig. 3 (not shown) expansion of a temperature sensitive element (52) within the water pump impeller shaft (44) moves left a piston (54) which acts through a liquid column (65) to move friction lined pistons (68) radially outward into engagement with a drum (63) of a fan hub (62).
