Abstract

1314625 Permanent waving and uncurling EUGENE-GALLIA 19 April 1971 [5 June 1970 2 Nov 1970] 22294/71 Heading DIP Human hair is permanently waved, curled or uncurled using a composition comprising thioglycollic or thiolactic acid or an alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof, and an alkalinizing agent in the form of the carbonate of an amino acid alkali metal salt, the composition being substantially devoid of free ammonia. The aminoacid alkali metal salt carbonate may be prepared separately, or formed during the preparation of the composition by adding lithium, sodium or potassium carbonate to an amino acid selected from: glysine, lysine, methionine, tyrosine, glutamic acid, leucine, valine, or alanine, either in optical isomeric or racemic form. Either the carbonate or the amino acid may be in excess, or the quantities may be stoichiometric. The composition may include a base, such as morpholine, monoethanolamine or triethanolamine, to increase the hair permeability, lauryl pyridinium chloride or cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide to increase the curling rate of the hair, and oxyethyleneated lanoline to have a softening effect. Other additives include sequestering, and opaquing agents, and perfume. De-mineralised water may be used to make up an aqueous solution for use in permanent waving. For uncurling hair, the solution is applied as a viscous emulsion containing cetyl alcohol emulsified with oxyethylenated cetyl alcohol. The action of the composition may be accelerated by heat.
