Abstract

1313164 Blood plasma substitutes KNOX GELATINE INC 28 April 1970 [28 April 1969] 20279/70 Heading ASB [Also in Division C3] A blood plasma substitute comprises an aqueous solution of: 0.5 to 6% of gelatin or gelatin derived compound; a non-toxic acetate, citrate, gluconate or lactate in an amount capable of generating in vivo 20 to 60 mEq of bicarbonate ions in body fluids for each litre of solution administered; and sodium, potassium and chloride ions in physiological concentration. Modified fluid gelatin, the reaction product of gelatin of average M.W. 15,000-36,000 with succinic anhydride, oxypolygelatin, and polypeptides coupled with diisocyanate are examples of gelatin derived compounds. The blood plasma substitute preferably contains 135-155 mEq sodium ions, 3-5 mEq potassium ions, 90-110 mEq chloride ions, 2-4 mEq magnesium ions and 3-5 mEq calcium ions per litre. An example discloses blood plasma substitutes comprised of one of the above gelatin-derived compounds, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium lactate, glucose or fructose (optional) and distilled water.
