1312732 Separating gases RICOH KK 27 April 1970 [13 May 1969] 20065/70 Heading B1L In removing NH 3 or other offensive odour component from a gaseous mixture, e.g. that emerging from an ammonia process diazo photocopying machine, the gases are drawn from a conduit 4 into a lower end of a column 2 by a fan 3 driven by a motor 7 which also drives pumps 14, 19 to respectively introduce and remove an ammonia removing chemical, e.g. an aqueous solution of an aldehyde, a mineral acid or an organic acid into and from the column 2 where it countercurrently contacts the gases whilst passing through a filler 8 e.g. glass beads or pumice stone particles, supported on a net 9. The gases then pass through a net 10 supporting an adsorbent 10, e.g. a porous amphoteric ion exchange resin, to remove the remainder of the NH 3 . The gas exits via the sides of a cover 23 of a housing 1. The adsorbent may be enclosed in a gauze bag. A warning device 24 connected by conduits to the adsorbent and inlet conduit 4 measures the degree of saturation of the adsorbent. The adsorbent housing section of the column 2 may be at right angles to the remainder of the column or may be bent over in a U-shape, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
