Abstract

1312364 Mixing liquids; magnetic stirrers; dilution and dispensing device J WALDMAN 9 Dec 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 58432/70 Headings B1C and B1X [Also in Division Fl] A reciprocating pump for mixing liquid and dispensing a series of dilutions comprises pistons 3, 4 projecting into opposite ends of a cylinder 1 which is provided with a series of equally spaced diluent inlet openings 7 and a series of equally spaced discharge openings 10. A drive mechanism 25 acts through rack and pinion gearing to displace the pistons 3, 4. By selective independent and simultaneous movement of the pistons 3, 4 a standard volume of the liquid to be diluted is drawn into the cylinder 1 and mixed with an equal volume of diluent. Half the mixture is then discharged into a receptacle and the remaining half mixed with an equal volume of diluent, this process being repeated to obtain the series of dilutions. An initial "control" receptacle 11 is provided with a standard volume of either the diluent or the liquid to be diluted. A small stirring magnet 30 incorporated in a synthetic material may be introduced into the mixing chamber between the pistons and rotated by a rotating magnetic field. The ends 2 of the cylinder 1 are flared and the pistons 3, 4 are moved so that their end faces lie within the flared portion of the cylinder 1 during cleaning and sterilization of the apparatus.
