1312279 Polycarboxylic acid monoanhydrides SOC CHIMIQUE DES CHARBONNAGES 18 Nov 1970 [19 Nov 1969] 54901/70 Heading C2C Mono-anhydrides of acids that are at least tetracarboxylic are prepared by heating the acid in the temperature range wherein only the monoanhydride is formed, the temperature range being determined by thermo-gravimetric study. The acid may be heated in powder form or a solution of the acid in water may be heated in the presence of a solvent which forms an azeotrope with water and which may be either a good or a poor solvent for the resulting monoanhydride. In the examples, cyclopentane- 1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid is dehydrated to the 1,2-mono-anhydride and meso-butane-1,2, 3,4-tetracarboxylic acid is dehydrated to the novel 2,3-mono-anhydride which is characterized by its dimethyl ester.
