Abstract
1312035 Electroslag remelting apparatus CONSARC CORP 10 May 1971 [11 May 1970] 14011/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division H5] In order to prevent stirring of the molten metal pool 56 by the interacting magnetic fields of the main process current and the current in the supply conductors of an electroslag furnace 10, it is arranged that the current conductor to the top of the electrode 50 and the return conductor from the base of the ingot 53 form a vertically orientated coaxial conductor arrangement. The return conductor is a plurality of discrete conductors 58, 60, 62, 64 or is the crucible 12 itself, in the latter case the crucible being electrically connected to the base 20 as well as to the head 22. Head 22 is reciprocably and rotatably supported above the crucible 12 by a pin 24 which is lifted by an hydraulic cylinder 97. A water cooled conductor 34 is supported on the head 22 by hydraulic cylinders 36, and electrode 50 is supported at the end of conductor 34 by a clamp 48. Power is supplied to conductor 34 via a sliding contact assembly 52 in head 22 and via a pair of water cooled conductors 54 from the power supply 200. Each of the return conductors 58-64 is in two separable sections 66, 68, 70, 72, and 82, 84, 86, 88, with coupling parts 92, 94, and locking means 96.
