1311881 Heat-insulating composition containing "floaters"; foundry mould compositions RESIL PROCESSES Ltd 12 June 1970 [29 March 1969] 16609/69 Heading C3N An insulating refractory material suitable for use in the manufacture of foundry moulds and feeder heads or hot tops therefor comprises a refractory aggregate including a proportion of undried, wet-collected floaters, defined as those floaters skimmed from the surface of a lagoon containing fly ash, and a proportion of polyelectrolyte in an amount effective to produce a mass having a semi-dry consistency. The polyelectrolyte may be a protein, a polysaccharide, or a polyvinyl pyridine-alkyl halide addition product, and preferably comprises up to 5% by weight of the material, more preferably 0À2- 4-5% by weight. The material may also contain a proportion of a binder selected from sulphite lye, gum arabic, wheat flour, starch, linseed oil or synthetic resins. In addition a proportion of lightweight refractory aggregate or ball clay may also be included.
