Abstract

1311781 Electro-magnetic mixing NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY I KONSTRUKTORSKOTECHNOLOGICHESKY INSTITUT NIIEMALKHIMMASH 13 March 1970 12069/ 70 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions C1 C3 and H1] A polymer-containing composition is prepared by subjecting to the influence of a rotating electromagnetic field, a mixture of a polymer with a particulate material at least part of which is ferromagnetic. The magnetic field rotating for example at 3000 r.p.m. and having a preferred intensity of at least 0.1 teala, causes rotation of the ferromagnetic particles with superficial disintegration of the particulate material to sizes down to colloidal. The polymer may be used in liquid or solid powder form. The particulate material may be wholly ferromagnetic e.g. iron, cobalt, nickel or alloys thereof or comprise also non-ferromagnetic material e.g. aluminium, copper, lead, molybdenum disulphide, graphite or a metal oxide e.g. titania. The ferromagnetic material may be in cylindrical form 6-7mms long; preferably it is coated with a protective film of a polymer whereby polymer compositions containing non-magnetic particulates and free from ferro-magnetic material may be obtained. Colloidal dispersions of ferromagnetic metal particles in polymer can be obtained for example by flowing the polymer continuously through the system, the larger metal particles being retained by the magnetic field. In typical Examples: (1) a mixture of poly-tetrafluoroethylene and steel particles in ethanol is treated yielding polymer containing 0.05% colloidal steel and nickel may replace the steel; (2) a mixture of an epoxy resin, aluminium powder and steel particles is treated, the mixture is then settled and resin containing 0.02% aluminium recovered and polymerised with a polyethylene polyamine prepolymer; (3) a mixture of epoxy resin and cast iron chips is treated yielding a resin sol of colloidal iron; (4) a mixture of liquid synthetic resin, epoxy resin, triethanol amine and steel particles is treated yielding a product containing 0.02% colloidal steel which is compression moulded; (7) a mixture of poly-tetrafluoroethylene and 10% powdered aluminium or nickel is intermixed using ferromagnetic particles coated with polytetrafluoroethylene; (9) a mixture of aluminium powder and 10% phenol-formaldehyde resin is intermixed using steel particles. Other intermixtures mentioned are of polycarbonate with titania or aluminium powder; polyamide and nickel powder; and polytetrafluoroethylene with nickel powder and graphite or molybdenum disulphide.
