1311112 Isothiocyanates DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 23 June 1970 [11 July 1969] 30381/70 Heading C2C Isothiocyanates of the formula RNCS (where R is an alkyl C 1-18 radical optionally substituted by alkylthio C 1-12 and/or alkoxy C 1-12 radicals; a cycloalkyl radical; an aralkyl radical; or an aryl radical optionally substituted by one or more bromine or chlorine atoms or alkyl C 1-4 or alkoxy C 1-12 radicals) are prepared by reacting 1 mole of a triazine of Formula I: (where X is an alkylthio C 1-12 , monoalkyl C 1-12 - amino or alkoxy C 1-12 radical, or an aryl radical optionally substituted by one or more halogen atoms or X is a chlorine atom) with 2 or 3 moles of a dithiocarbamate of formula RNHCSSM, where M is an alkali metal atom, the ammonium group or a valency of an alkaline earth metal, at 0-50‹ C. in the presence of water as a solvent or in a mixture of water and an organic solvent, to form the corresponding bis- or trisdithiocarbamate of the triazine which is then decomposed generally at a temperature of 0‹ to 100‹ C. into the corresponding mercaptotriazine and the desired isothiocyanate and the mixture obtained is separated either by steam distillation or by extraction. Examples describe the preparation of methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, phenethyl, benzyl, phenyl and cyclohexylisothiocyanates.
