Abstract

1310941 Compositions comprising asphalt and micro-granular coal NICHIREKI KAGAKU KOGYO CO Ltd 12 March 1970 [12 March 1969] 12008/70 Heading C3N A process for the preparation of a paving composition comprising a uniform mixture of (a) micro-granular coal which has not been thermally decomposed and (b) asphalt, containing 3-50% by weight of the micro-granular coal, comprises triturating a mixture of coal and the asphalt to reduce the coal to micro-granular coal, the temperature of the mixture being maintained below the thermal decomposition of the coal during the trituration. As a coal, may be used peat, lignite, brown coal or bituminous coal. A suitable temperature of trituration would be below 200‹ C. The paving composition may optionally contain a modifying agent such as a crude oil, a heavy mineral oil, a light mineral oil, a tar (3-30%), a pitch (5-20%), a natural or synthetic rubber (0À5-5%), a fat or fatty oil (2-10%), a synthetic resin (0À5- 10%), a natural resin (1-10%), a petroleum resin (1-10%), a natural resin oil (1-10%), a coal oil (3-15%), a chlorine-containing organic solvent (1-30%), tetrahydronaphthalene (0À5- 8%) or a metallic soap (0À1-2%). Numerous examples of these materials are disclosed. In a modification the modifying agent is mixed with the coal and the mixture triturated at a temperature below the thermal decomposition of the coal prior to adding the asphalt. The said mixture is suitably triturated so as to reduce the mean particle size to 1 to 100 microns, preferably 1-30 microns. The trituration is preferably effected in a continuous grinder with a quern consisting of upper and lower triturating members. The mixture may be admixed, preferably in an amount 3-30% by weight, with aggregates such as water-wetted ground stone and pebbles, baked synthetic aggregates and cement concretes. The ingredients of the examples are as follows:-(1) asphalt and brown coal; (2) asphalt, naphtha crude oil, kerosene and brown coal; (3) asphalt, petroleum resin, kerosene, and brown coal; (4) asphalt, petroleum resin, naphtha crude oil, dichloropropane, and brown coal; (5) asphalt, petroleum resin, kerosene, natural rubber, and brown coal; (6) asphalt, ethylene - vinyl acetate copolymer, naphtha crude oil, dichloropropane, and brown coal; (7) asphalt, petroleum resin, polypropylene, naphtha crude oil, petroleum naphtha, dichloropropane and brown coal; (8) asphalt, polypropylene, kerosene, petroleum naphtha, dichloropropane, and brown coal; (9) asphalt, kerosene, petroleum naphtha, butadiene-styrene rubber latex, and brown coal; (10) asphalt, petroleum naphtha, pine oil, dichloropropane, butyl rubber, and brown coal; (11) asphalt, kerosene, petroleum naphtha, rubber powder, α-chloronaphthalene and brown coal; (12) asphalt, kerosene, dichloropropane, and bituminous coal (more asphalt is added after trituration); (13) asphalt, heavy mineral oil, fatty acid pitch, kerosene and bituminous coal; (14) asphalt, coal tar, creosote, dichloropropane and brown coal; (15) asphalt, kerosene and brown coal (+ further asphalt); (16) asphalt, heavy oil, tetrachloroethylene, tetrahydronaphthalene, butadiene-styrene rubber, emulsified ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer and brown coal; and (17) asphalt, heavy oil, dichloropropane, fish oil, magnesium soap, and brown coal.
