Abstract

1310768 Hydrophobic oxides DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 26 March 1970 [29 March 1969] 14669/70 Heading C1A Metal or silicon oxides are hydrophobized by dehydrating at 600-1000‹ C. with an inert dry gas, either in fluidized bed or in countercurrent flow, and heating at 350-650‹ C. in contact with an organopolysiloxane, which is introduced at 25-350‹ C. in vapour form before and/or during heating. The steps may be effected simultaneously at 600-650‹ C., in which case the material is initially activated with U.V. light. An organohalogen silane may also be introduced with or before the siloxane. The products may be passed through a final heating zone where the temperature decreases from 250- 500‹ C. to 125-250‹ C. The process may be carried out in one continuous tube or in 4 separate vessels, corresponding to dehydrating, charging, and 2 heating stages. N 2 or air may be used as the inert gas and to carry the organic vapours. The heating at 350-650‹ C. may be effected in counter current gas flow or in an autoclave. The material treated is preferably pyrogenic SiO 2 . The siloxane may be hexamethyldi-, hexamethylcyclotri-, octamethylcyclotetra-, octamethyltri-, or decamethyl tetrasiloxane. The silane may be an alkyl- or aryl- or alkyl-aryl-mono-, di-, or tri-chlorosilane.
