1310342 Photographic silver halide printing method KODAK Ltd 10 July 1970 [8 Aug 1969] 39784/69 Heading G2C A method of forming a composite photographic image comprises exposing the sensitive silver halide layer of a silver halide photographic material to form a latent image corresponding to one image component, developing the latent image to a visible image by treating the layer with a silver halide developing solution, treating the layer so as to arrest development of the silver halide therein and then forming a further image component by exposing the layer imagewise to cause printing-out of the undeveloped silver halide. Development may be arrested by treatment of the layer with an acidic aqueous solution, which may contain a halogen acceptor. The acidic aqueous solution may be formed by acidifying a quantity of the silver halide developing solution. The undeveloped silver halide is preferably printed-out in the presence of an aqueous solution of a halogen acceptor which enables the printing-out stage to be carried out uniformly. After development has been arrested the sensitive material may be masked, in the areas that do not require exposure to form a print-out image, with an opaque waterproof material. The layer may be fixed after the formation of the composite image e.g. with a neutral or alkaline fixing solution. The printing-out of the undeveloped silver halide may be monitored photo-electrically using non-actinic radiation. The positioning of the print-out image is made easier by this process since one image component is visible. The process is useful for producing integral masks for adjusting the transmission of the low density areas of line images in gravure cylinder preparation and in producing micro-electronics reticules and certain micro-film frames.
