Abstract

130,981. Roy, C. Aug. 3, 1918, [Convention date]. Wood, treating with liquids.-Logs of timber are impregnated first with hot or cold water to drive out the sap and other resinous, oily, albuminoid, &c. products, which are collected in a vat for the recovery of these products, and then with a solution of casein or other liquid for preserving the timber against moisture or heat or for colouring it. The apparatus comprises a cylinder e mounted on a pivot c on a fixed base, band formed with an enlarged end e' recessed to receive a cylindrical body f having a recessed flange f<2> and ring h adapted to fit the end of the log i. The latter is encircled by a clamp having links k and other links provided with teeth to grip the wood firmly. The clamp is gripped on the log by tightening screws and secured by bolts o to the flange f<2> of the member f, which is clamped to the cylinder e by bolts g, packing being interposed at c<3> and between the ring h and the end of the log to ensure a tight joint. The rear end of the cylinder is connected by a pipe s to a pump when a single element is in use, and by a pipe t to a manifold pipe u when several of the devices are operated together. The casein solution employed is admixed with ammonia and quicklime. After impregnation, the logs are cut up into planks and dried in a chamber at high temperature. Vacuum apparatus may be used in place of, or in conjunction with, the pressure apparatus.
