Abstract
1309606 Sugar-modified VF resins; resin/ sodium silicate foundry sand binders R MATALON 19 April 1971 [14 April 1970] 9861/71 C3N and C3R A liquid condensation product is obtained by heating a mixture comprising 44-77 wt. per cent of a reducing sugar, 5-22 wt. per cent of urea, 4-19 wt. per cent of formaldehyde and 9-18À3 wt. per cent of water at pH 5-6, optionally with up to 1 wt. per cent of a polyhydric phenol. The product is used with sodium silicate in binders for foundry sand moulds. Suitable sugars include dextrose, fructose, galactose, mannose, laevulose, lactose and maltose. The resin/silicate ratio in the binder is preferably 0À5-4 : 1, and there may also be present 3-12 wt. per cent of borax (relative to resin plus silicate. In the examples maltose or glucose is heated with urea, formaldehyde, water and optionally resorcinol, with small amounts of borax and NaOH and optionally capric acid and/or maleic anhydride, and optionally furfuryl alcohol and hexylene glycol and cyclohexanol. The product resins are mixed with sodium silicate and used as binders for foundry sand. Silica, zircon, chromite or olivine sands are suitable.
