Abstract
1309011 Extruding laminar plastics sheet; laminates DOW CHEMICAL CO 26 Feb 1970 [10 March 1969] 9413/70 Headings B5A and B5N A thermoplastics laminate comprises an inner barrier layer, e.g. of 0À2 to 5À0 mils. thickness, resistant to the passage of moisture and oxygen, with an adhesive layer, e.g. of 0À2 to 1À0 mil. on either side thereof, to one of which is adhered a polyeolefin layer, e.g. of 1 to 5 mils., and to the other of which is adhered a styrene polymer layer, e.g. of 10 to 100 mils. thickness. The styrene layer 33 is extruded from a die 32 and applied by hot rolls 34, 34A to the remainder 29 of the laminate extruded from a die 28, the laminate being cooled by rolls 36. The die 28 comprises multiple inlets from different extruders; 23 for the inner barrier layer; 25 for the adhesive 14 which is distributed by a plenum 25A around the outlet of passage 23; and 27, for the polyolefin 16, which is subdivided and recombined by a baffle 37 into layers, each of a thickness preferably equal to that of the adhesive and barrier layer, at the outlet of passage 23; the combined layers being distributed by a manifold 38 to issue as the sheet 29 from the die. It is stated that the barrier layer preferably comprises a polymer containing at least 70% by weight vinylidene chloride, e.g. 85% thereof with 15% vinyl chloride, but may also comprise vinylidene fluoride polymers. The adhesive layer preferably comprises either ethylene co-polymer with vinyl acetate, ethylacrylate, isobutyl acrylate, or chlorinated paraffin containing polyvinyl chloride. The polyolefin may comprise polyethylene or polypropylene. The styrene layer may comprise polymers of various specified monovinyl aromatic compounds, mixtures of such with 50% or less of monomeric vinyl or vinylidene chloride, high impact styrene based on natural or GRS rubber, or stryene - acrylonitrilebutadiene co-polymer.
