Abstract
1308950 Pipe couplings PIRELLI -GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd 26 May 1971 [19 June 1970] 29868/70 Heading F2G [Also in Divisions B3 and H2] In a method of jointing or terminating a fluid (e.g. oil) filled cable sheath 16, e.g. of corrugated A1 tube, a tubular portion 20 of a metal component 22 is inserted with an interference fit into an end portion of the sheath 16, the extreme end 28 of the latter engaging an annular lip 30, which projects axially from a radial flange portion 32 of component 22, so defining a circumferential space 42 from which filling fluid and generated gases are removed by the application of a vacuum source to one or more ducts 34 in flange portion 32 while sheath end 28 and lip 30 are sealingly joined together, as by welding or plumb-wiping. A clearance between tubular portion 20 and cable core 14 permits the flow of fluid, which is, however, partially arrested by a rubber glove 46. For a cable joint, component 22 is sealingly connected to a similar component on a second cable end by means of a tubular joint sleeve 48, which is secured at 50 to flanges 32, as by welding or bolting. For a cable termination; a sleeve or end bell is connected between flange 32 and the termination. The invention is also applicable to the jointing and terminating of fluid carrying metal pipes.
