Abstract

1308757 Sealing glass to metal RCA CORPORATION 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 1970] 24316/71 Heading C1M Glass and metal members wherein the metal member is malleable and has a softening temperature below that of the glass are sealed together by applying a pressure to the assembled members which is substantially perpendicular to the interface between the members, the pressure being sufficient to deform the metal member at temperatures below its softening temperature, then while retaining the applied pressure, heating the members at their interface to a sealing temperature below the softening temperature of the glass, and maintaining the members at the sealing temperature for a predetermined time. Preferably the pressure is between 2000 and 7000 pounds per square inch, the sealing temperature is between 450‹ and 650‹ C. and the predetermined time is at least one minute. In a preferred embodiment the glass members are a hollow cylinder 12 and a disc 10 having the same diameter. The metal member is an aluminium ring 16. The pressure is applied by a pneumatic press acting through a plastic pressure disc 22 at the bottom of the cylinder and a ceramic ram 20 contacting the disc 10. The assembly is heated by an electric resistance heater 26.
