1308697 Coating AMICON CORP 22 April 1970 [2 May 1969] 19275/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A coating composition particularly suitable for plastics surfaces comprises (1) a melamine compound wherein R 1 is a C1-7 alkyl radical or -CH 2 OR 2 and R 2 is H or a C1-4 alkyl radical, and (2) an alkylene glycol, an aliphatic polyether polyol, or an aliphatic polyester polyol, in amounts providing a ratio of OH groups in (2): hydroxyalkyl or alkoxyalkyl groups in (1) of 1:1-3. The composition may also contain a levelling agent, e.g. 0.5-0 wt % of a ureaformaldehyde resin, and a UV stabilizer, e.g. up to 5 wt. % of a hydroxyphenyl benzotrizole. In Examples solid or liquid hexamethoxymethylmelamine is mixed with a polyester polyol, or a polyethylene glycol of MW 200, 400 or 600, or ethylene, diethylene or triethylene glycol, p-toluenesulphonic acid, and optionally a 60% solution of a UF resin in butanol/xylene, and, with an ethyl acetate/ ethoxyethyl acetate solvent for the solid methoxymethylmelamine, to give coating solutions for panels of a polymethyl methacrylate or a polycarbonate.
