1308608 Decorative plastics strips and motifs CREATORS Ltd 14 April 1970 [22 April 1969 7 April 1970] 20601/69 and 16524/70 Heading B6G A decorative strip comprises as shown in Fig. 8 an extruded plastics strip 1 consisting of a central tape-like web portion 2 along each side of which is a bead portion 3 which projects above the front face of the web portion, each bead portion having a welding flange portion 4, the extruded plastics strip having bonded to the front face of the web portion a decorative strips and each of the bead portions having a metallized finish. The plastics strip 1 may be polyvinyl chloride. The decorative strip 5 may be a strip of polyvinyl chloride printed to simulate a wood grain or leather grain finish, bonded to the web portion by a coating of plastics adhesive on its rear surface. The metallized finish of the bead portions may be provided by strips of metallized transparent foil, each comprising a strip of transparent plastics material the rear face of which is metallized with aluminium, the metallized layer being bonded to a layer of polyvinyl chloride which can be readily heat bonded to the strip 1. Preferably longitudinal grooves 7 are formed along the rear of the plastics strip directly behind the beads and extending thereinto. The plastics strips may be used for ornamentation by welding by means of the welding flanges 4 to a base surface such as the sheet plastics facing on the interior of a motor car door. A decorative motif is produced as shown in Fig. 8 by fabricating the twin-beaded decorative plastics strip, fabricating a strip of auxiliary plastics material 8 comprising a bead portion having the shape of one of the bead portions of the twin-beaded strip, the bead portion having a metallized finish, and flanges 4a, cutting off a desired length of the twin-beaded strip, mitreing the ends of the bead portions thereof and cutting off the ends of the web portion between the mitred ends of the bead portions, cutting off pieces of the auxiliary strip and mitreing their ends so as to fit between the mitred ends of the bead portions of twin-beaded strip, and then positioning the pieces of auxiliary strip across the ends of the twin-beaded strip with their inwardly facing flanges beneath the ends of the web portion and welding or sticking the flanges to the rear face of the web portion. The twin-beaded and auxiliary strips may be fabricated with grooves 9 along the rear face of the web portion and 11 along the upper surface of the flange which is to project inwardly of the motif, respectively. The inwardly facing flanges of the auxiliary strip may then be welded to the back of the web portion under pressure to cause part of the softened plastics material to flow into the grooves as the flange is compressed during the welding operation. The side of the auxiliary strip which is to face inwardly of the motif may be provided with a longitudinal recess 10 of a height corresponding to the thickness of the web portion so that by mitreing the end of the strip 1 so that the end of the web portion 2 projects slightly beyond the inner ends of the mitre, the projecting end of the web portion extends into the recess 11. The motif may be embossed or printed. The welding flanges projecting around the entire motif can be welded to a base surface by high frequency welding.
