Abstract
1307941 Producing metal powders SHINKU YAKIN KK 5 Feb 1970 [13 Feb 1969 8 April 1969 18 Dec 1969(2)] 5631/70 Heading C7D Fine powders of metal or alloy are produced by heating and evaporating or sublimating the metal or alloy in a chamber, introducing a gas flow into the chamber to one side of the surface of the metal or alloy, conveying the vapour evolved by means of the gas flow to a cooling means having a surface on the other side of the surface of the evaporating sublimating metal or alloy and cooling and solidifying the vapour on to the cooling surface in the form of a powder. In the figure a flow of gas 35 is heated by coils 36 and introduced into chamber 1 through a diffuser plate 37. The gas passes across the surface of metal evaporating from crucible 31 and conveys the vapour to within conical surface 19 cooled by cooling coils 30 where it condenses as powder. Scraper 22 dislodges the powder to fall into hopper 24 and receptacle 25. The gas flow may be inert, such as a mixture of helium with 10-80% hydrogen and, in a modification it may be introduced as a plasma jet impinging on the metal surface at an acute angle. Alternatively it may be oxidizing to produce oxidized metal powder. The metal may be heated to evaporating temperature by induction or by electron beam or laser or maser beam.
