Abstract
1307757 Graft polymerization process FOSTER GRANT CO Inc 13 Aug 1970 [15 Aug 1969] 39153/70 Heading C3G An impact resistant polymer is produced by a process comprising (a) bulk polymerizing a mixture of a mono-alkenyl aromatic monomer and a butadiene rubber; (b) adding 0À005 to 0À5%, .based on the weight of rubber and monomer, of a mercaptan to the polymerization mixture, at least 0À005% of which mercaptan is added after 2 but before 15% by weight of the monomer has been converted to polymer and the remainder, if any, is subsequently added in one or more increments; and (c) continuing the bulk polymerization until substantially all of the monomer has been converted, or until 20 to 50% of the monomer has been converted and completing the polymerization in aqueous suspension. In examples, one portion of dodecyl mercaptan is added during the bulk pre-polymerization of a styrene/polybutadiene mixture and polymerization is completed in suspension. The polymer produced is blended with polystyrene.
