Abstract

1307664 Feeding sheets POLYGRAPH LEIPZIG KOMBINAT FUR POLYGRAPHISCHE MASCHINEN UND AUSRUSTUNGEN VEB 22 April 1971 10736/71 Heading B8R [Also in Division G4] A sheet processing machine includes a device for determining the position of an edge of a sheet 3 relative to a datum line, e.g. defined by front lay stops 2, the device comprising one or more photo-electric receivers 4 providing a plurality of light receiving portions spaced longitudinally in the direction of sheet feed, means 10 for irradiating the portions with light energy, means for deriving electrical signals respectively responsive to the received light energy, analogue/digital converter means to convert each signal to a respective digital signal and means for analysing the digital signals to determine the relative position of the sheet edge. The photo-electric receivers may be staggered laterally as well as being spaced in the sheet feed. direction to detect slanting sheets, Fig. 3 (not shown). Alternatively, the irradiating means may be laterally and longitudinally spaced and irradiate respective portions of a single photo-electric receiver. A multiple unit receiver comprising a plurality of laterally spaced photoelectric receivers (4<SP>11</SP>), Fig. 4 (not shown), having a mask (8) providing longitudinal spacing may be provided. The irradiating means may comprise a self luminous or non-self luminous source, a light source and mirror system or a light source and prismatic system. In each case the irradiating means is mounted on a pivotable lever for movement out of the sheet feed path.
