Abstract
1307494 Heating sludge VEREINIGTE KESSELWERKE AG 20 April 1971 [20 April 1970] 10184/71 Heading C1C In an apparatus for thermally conditioning sewage sludge to prepare it for dewatering, in which sludge is heated by steam at elevated temperature and pressure in reactor 1, a stream of crude sludge is passed through the upper chambers 12 of a plurality of direct heat exchangers, e.g. 2c, 2b, 2a while a stream of conditioned sludge from reactor 1 is passed through the lower chambers 11 of the exchangers, the pressure of the conditioned sludge stream being reduced through expansion valves 4a-4d, so that vapours evolved during expansion of the conditioned sludge mix with the crude sludge and condense in the chambers 12 to gradually increase the temperature and pressure of the crude sludge stream. Saturated vapour conditions are attained in the upper chambers 12. The upper chambers 12 contain plates 14a, 14b for breaking up the crude sludge. The upper chambers 12 may be provided with nozzles or rotating plates for breaking up the crude sludge.
