Abstract

1306974 Composite filaments TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 16 July 1970 34505/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] A bundle of fine filaments comprises a plurality of synthetic polymeric filaments continuously extending substantially parallel to each other along the length of the bundle, and numerous synthetic polymeric fibrils discontinuously extending along the length of the bundle, and distributed in spaces between the fine filaments. The fibrils are much finer than the fine filaments, and may or may not be attached to them. These bundles are formed from "islands-in-asea" type composite filaments which have the fine filaments embedded in a sea formed from a blend of 50 to 93% by weight of a major component and 7 to 50% by weight of a minor component which is dispersed in the major component. Treating these composite filaments by a method which removes the major component of the "sea" only, leaves the bundle of filaments. The composite filaments are spun in an apparatus of the type shown in Fig. 3A. The "island" constituent polymer A, which eventually forms the fine filaments is fed in through passages 26, and meets the blend B, which is fed in via passages 24 and 18, at the branched ends 19 of pipes 25. The mixture is then extruded via pipes 25 and passages 22 into chambers 20 where several extrusions merge. The filament is finally extruded via orifices 23, and may then be drawn. The "island" constituents constitute preferably between 15% and 75% by weight of the composite filament and may themselves be formed of a blend, rather than a pure homopolymer. Examples given are composite filaments prepared from polyethylene terephthalate or nylon 6 as the "island" component with either of these blended with polystyrene as the "sea" component. In these examples the polystyrene is the major "sea" component and is removed by dissolving it out with trichloroethylene or tetrachloroethylene. Also exemplified is a filament with polyethylene terephthalate as the island component and the same, blended with a larger proportion of nylon-6 as the sea component. In this case the nylon-6 is removed by treatment with formic acid. If the "island" and the minor "sea" components are made of copolymers of polyethylene terephthalate, the bundle of filaments have large thermoshrinkage.
