Abstract

1306387 Treadle propelled cycle C BOSSAER 12 May 1970 [13 May 1969 24 March 1970] 22858/70 Heading B7E In a bicycle, pedals 1 and 2 are mounted on the free ends 3 and 4 of control levers 5 and 6 arranged to swing about shafts 8 in vertical planes on each side of the bicycle frame 7, the lever 5 being connected by way of chain 14 which passes over free-wheeling pinion 15, direction reversing gears 20 and 21 and freewheeling pinion 16 to lever 6. A chain 24<SP>1</SP> connects sprocket 24 to a sprocket wheel 25 attached to the bicycle driving wheel 11, the sprocket 24 being either made fast to shaft 17 or a free-wheeling sprocket so arranged as to be positively driven by rotation of shaft 17 upon operation of the pedals 1 and 2. Direction reversing gears 20 and 21 which co-operate with a section 28 of chain 14 having its rollers at right angles to the rollers of the other sections of chain 14 may be replaced by a single direction reversing gear. A free-wheeling pinion 33 which co-operates with projection 34 on housing 18 ensures that shaft 17 can rotate only in a direction corresponding to forward motion of the bicycle. Each end of chain 14 has a connecting part 35<SP>1</SP> with a row of holes 36<SP>1</SP> to enable adjustable connection to be made to rows of holes 37 in levers 5 and 6.
