Abstract
1306240 Cooling reactors COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 21 July 1970 [25 July 1969] 35316/70 Heading G6C [Also in Division C1] Coolant CO 2 gas from a graphite-moderated nuclear reactor which contains as contaminants H 2 , CO and O 2 (the H 2 and GO resulting from the presence in the CO 2 of methane as a corrosion inhibitor), the O 2 being present in an amount not exceeding that required to oxidize the H 2 and CO but sufficient to oxidize all the H 2 (extra O 2 being injected for this purpose, if necessary) is purified by passing over two catalysts in sequence: the first catalyst is active for the oxidation of hydrogen and is maintained at a sufficient temperature to complete this reaction and the second catalyst, which is more active than the first for CO oxidation, is Ru, Pd-Cu, Pd-Ag or Ag and is maintained at a sufficient temperature to ensure that all the remaining O 2 reacts with CO. The first catalyst may be Pd. Both catalysts are preferably supported, e.g. on Al 2 O 3 . In the Figure the coolant system of reactor 10 comprises a heat exchanger 12, blower 14 and purification loop 16. The gas in the purification loop passes through the two catalysts, in this example contained in a single reactor 17, and is cooled in heat exchanger 20, then the water formed in the oxidation is removed at 22. A corrosion inhibitor, e.g. methane, may be added via line 28.
