Abstract
1306180 Armour piercing incendiary projectiles and fuzes therefor K DIEHL 30 June 1971 [9 July 1970] 30604/71 Heading F3A A projectile which can be used against both armoured and structurally weak targets comprises a ballistic cap 4, Fig. 1, containing an incendiary charge 8, an armour-piercing body 1 containing an explosive incendiary charge 9, and a base fuze 6, 7 which detonates the charge 9 and causes the body to 1 burst behind the walls of the target thus scattering fragments and ignited incendiary composition in the target. A groove 3 provides a predetermined breaking line. The charge 8 ignites spontaneously at impact. The fuze 6, 7 comprises an inertia member 15, Fig. 2, integrally formed with a striker 18, a centrifugal spiral safety band 31 preventing movement of the striker against a detonator 32, and a spring loaded abutment member 21 which is locked in position by a centrifugal member 26 that is released only when the rotational speed of the projectile drops below a predtermined value. Upon firing the projectile, the band 31 expands and the striker 18 is thrown. against the detonator when a hand target is encountered. With a soft target, or in the event of a miss, the centrifugal member 26 unlocks the abutment member 21 when the speed of rotation falls sufficiently, and the spring 22 causes the abutment member to drive the striker into the detonator.
