Abstract
1306015 Cooling rotary kilns FIVES LILLECAIL 6 Sept 1971 [9 Sept 1970 11 June 1971] 41529/71 Heading F4B A rotary kiln or heat exchanger comprises a ring 14 fixed to the cylindrical body 10 of the apparatus by one or more annular webs, a sealed annular chamber formed between the ring 14 and the body 10 and scoops 20 integral with the ring 14 and arranged to pour liquid contained in the chamber over the surface of the kiln body 10 so that evaporated liquid condenses on the inner surface of the ring 14 and runs down to the bottom of the chamber, so reducing the thermal stresses between the ring and the body. The chamber may be closed by the annular webs 16 supporting the ring, Fig. 2, and pyrometers 21 directed to the joins between the webs and the body 10 enable the process to be monitored. In a modification, Fig. 4, tubes or hollow plates 22 are arranged to open into the chamber through the webs 16 and have external fins to increase the cooling effect. The internal walls of the chamber may be lined with porous or capillary material, e.g. braided wire, glass or metal fibre or porous metal or be grooved to facilitate the return of condensed coolant.
