Abstract
1305929 Light Guides INTERNATIONAL PHOTON CORP 1 April 1970 [21 May 1969] 15547/70 Heading G2J [Also in Division B6] A plurality of flash lamps 515, Fig. 21 and 22, for transmitting light to the character matrix drum 20 of a photographic type-composing machine (see Division B6) are mounted in two banks on brackets 532, 534 on the machine frame 26. Each lamp is connected by a slotted extension 530 to a light channel comprising a flexible light pipe portion 514 coupled by a sleeve 516, Fig 24, to a rigid portion 512. The portions 512 are secured to a holder 502, projections of the portions 512 engaging grooves in the holder. The holder is movable by means of a stepping into three closely spaced apart positions circumferentially of the drum, and is moved into a successive position on each rotation of the drum. Each lamp comprises a flash portion 526 and trigger circuitary 528. In another form, Figs. 34 and 35 (not shown), the lamps are arranged in four rows, each lamp is associated with an optical condenser, and the light channels are stationary. In another form, the channels are movable between two positions. In another form, Fig. 43, the lamps are replaced by two lasers 700, 702, from which the light passes through a polarizer 704 to a deflector 706 including a plurality of electro-optic crystals 708, and thence to an eight-level channel input fall 710 and to a plurality of stationary light pipes 712. In the forms wherein the channels are stationary, two adjacent channels can be activated simultaneously, as by activation of both lasers. The flash selection and timing is controlled by a computer.
