Abstract
1305204 Automatic distillation apparatus; production of distilled water FISONS SCIENTIFIC APPARATUS Ltd 6 March 1970 [19 March 1969 13 June 1969] 14417/69 and 30034/ 69 Heading BIB A still, suitable for the production of distilled water in a laboratory, comprises a boiler vessel 2 provided with an electric immersion heater 4, a constant level and syphon device 18 for supplying water to the boiler 2 or for emptying the boiler when it requires cleaning, a thermostatic switch 6 for putting heater 4 out of operation if the water supply fails, and a condenser 8 joined to a conduit 11 for leading the distillate to a reservoir (not shown). The water is fed to the boiler from the mains via the cooling coil of condenser 8, tube 8' and device 18 (the inlet to the boiler cannot be seen for it is behind device 18). Excess water in device 18 flows out of the apparatus via side arm 19' and conduit 19. During normal operation there is an air-lock in the inverted U-tube of device 18. The distilled water flows through conduit 11 to the reservoir and, when full, a level-sensing device causes the heater and the water supply to be switched off. If the water supply should fail and the boiler overheat, switch 6 opens to switch off the heater and the water supply. When the boiler requires cleaning, valve 20 is actuated and this causes a jet of water from tube 16 to enter the open end of the U-tube in device 18 whereby the syphon operates and boiler 2 is emptied. Cleaning liquid (e.g. acid) is then passed into the boiler from funnel 21. The boiler may then be emptied as before, and may be flushed out with several changes of water. The boiler may be made of metal, plastics material or ceramics, but is preferably made of thermalshock-resistant glass. The apparatus may be used to distil liquids other than water. An organic solvent may be used to clean the boiler.
