Abstract

1303987 Fluid actuation of switches SAUNDERS & DUDLEY Ltd 30 Jan 1970 [30 Oct 1968] 51512/68 Heading H1N A pneumatic diaphragm switch comprises a flexible diaphragm 5 bounding a chamber 2, fixed contacts 9, 10 and a moving contact 8, the switch being operable by a pressure difference of no more than three ounces per square inch between atmospheric pressure and the pressure in chamber 2. The switch is intended for use by a paralysed patient in a wheelchair, with a tube 12, connected to chamber 2, in his mouth. Blowing down tube 12 closes contacts 8, 9, while sucking closes contacts 8, 10 to control the forward and reverse drive of an electric motor driving the wheelchair. The motor is stopped by allowing chamber 2 to communicate with atmospheric pressure, when contact 8 assumes the position shown between contacts 9 and 10.
