Abstract

1303643 Moulding plastic substances IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 June 1970 [24 June 1969] 31890/69 Heading B5A In a process for melt-shaping cross-linkable plastics compositions comprising polythene or an ethylene copolymer in which there is dispersed a peroxide cross-linking agent which is able to generate free radicals at temperatures substantially above that at which the composition becomes molten, the composition is fed from a hopper 1 to the heated barrel 4 of a screw extruder where it is melted and forced through a breaker plate 12 and bore 8 to a housing 18 containing a rotary member 17 whereby the temperature of the molten composition is increased by shear forces causing the crosslinking agent to generate free radicals before it passes from the housing to a mould or extrusion die. The barrel wall includes steam ducts and the housing may incorporate electric heaters 19. The composition may include foaming agents and glass, asbestos, carbon or plastics fibres.
