Abstract
130,362. Lessing, R. Jan. 28, 1918. Tar oils, extracting and purifying.-Tars and similar bodies are separated into oils and pitch by treatment with solvents which dissolve tar oils buo not pitch, at a temperature above that at which the pitch to be obtained melts. Preferably, the tar is first dehydrated, and the ammoniacal liquor, benzol, and naphtha are thus removed. The solvent is a petroleum distillate the bulk of which boils at a temperature above the melting- point of the pitch, e.g. a petroleum spirit boiling at 100-120‹ C. The apparatus consists of a vessel A in which the tar and solvent, admitted by pipes 1, 2, are mixed by a stirrer a at a temperature of 100‹ C. maintained by a steam-coil 9. The solution of tar oils overflows by a pipe 4 to a packed tower or column still B heated by close steam. The solvent vapours are led to a condenser D, and the recovered solvent is led back to the vessel A. The tar oils and pitch are removed through outlets 6, 11. A plunger 10 is used to clear the solvent-admission pipe 2. The operation may be continuous or intermittent. To purify the tar oils, the solution, on its way from the vessel A to the still B, is washed by a suitable liquid, an alkaline liquid being used to removo phenols &c., and an acid liquid to remove pyridine &c.
