Abstract
1302351 Load compensating; grinding H A WALDRICH GmbH 9 Jan 1970 [11 Jan 1969] 1230/70 Headings B3B B3C B3D B3K and B3L A machine tool, e.g. a double column machine tool having a machine tool head or heads displaceable on a transverse bearer adjustable in height by vertical lead-screws mounted along the columns, has a tensioning mechanism arranged to subject the lead screws to a load additional to that imposed thereon by the weight of the transverse bearer and the tool head or heads and adjustable to maintain a constant resultant loading of lead-screw regardless of the disposition of the said head or heads. In a single column machine tool in which the tool head or heads move along a cantilever transverse bearer, a tie-rod is used to support the bending moment on the column and a tensioning mechanism controls the load in the tierod to compensate the bending moment as the tool head or heads move along the transverse bearer. In the double column embodiment described the top end of lead-screws 4 are driven by worm drives 7 and the lower ends are supported in bearings 19 held in a sleeve 17 which is acted upon by a piston and rod 14, 16. A strain gauge arranged at the upper end of each lead-screw acts through a servo-control means upon a motor 20 of an hydraulic pump 21 to supply pressure to a cylinder 13 containing the piston and rod to initially pre-tension the lead-screws and subsequently to control the loading therein. In an alternative arrangement the piston and cylinder may be mounted horizontally and apply load via gearing. The tensioning mechanism may include a spring arrangement.
