Abstract
1302272 Attenuators WELWYN ELECTRIC Ltd 19 April 1971 [27 Feb 1970 9 Feb 1971] 9720/70 and 4249/71 Heading HIS To make a flat film T attenuator conductive terminal areas ABC are deposited on an insulating substrate together with a T-shaped resistive film PN which has a conductive film M deposited in electrical contact with it. In the equivalent circuit P is represented by two series resistors R1, R2, M by the junction and N by the resistor R3. P is adjusted first by removing part of the film, and when N is adjusted the value of P is not affected. In an embodiment (Fig. 3a) terminals 1, 2, 3, conductive portion 7 and the one-piece resistance element 5, 6, 10 are deposited by electroless plating, vacuum evaporation, or screen printing and firing of cermet materials on an insulating (e.g. ceramic) substrate. Area 5 is adjusted by cutting a notch 12 midway between terminals 1, 2, using a jet of abrasive particles, a laser beam &c. and area 10 is adjusted in a similar way at notch 15 while the resistance between two terminals or the overall attenuation is monitored. To make a "balanced T" or H attenuator (Fig. 4a) two terminals 18, 19, another conductive region 21 and an additional area of resistive element 28, 29 are used instead of the common terminal 3. A single substrate may carry decades of attenuators directly connected to switches, and the principle of dividing up a single resistive film element by one or more short-circuiting layers may be applied to other types of network.
