Abstract

1302204 Electric storage batteries JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 1 July 1970 [2 July 1969] 33329/69 Heading H1B [Also in Division G3] In an electric storage battery 11 the terminal post is formed with a blind bore which extends therethrough to the plate connecting strap 27, the bore having inserted therein a temperature sensitive element such as a thermistor 28 for sensing temperature changes in the battery in use, such as during charging. During charging of the battery using a generator 12, the thermistor 28 is electrically connected to a voltage regulator 15-26 so that the regulating voltage can be altered as changes in the temperature of the battery are sensed by the thermistor. In the charging circuit shown, thermistor 28 is electrically connected to the positive terminal post through the thermistor casing and the other connection is taken by a lead extending through the bore to the junction of resistors 15 and 16. The thermistor acts to change the battery voltage at which the Zener diode 18 conducts with temperature to provide the required temperature compensation. In an alternative arrangement the thermistor may be in an earthed terminal post from which it is insulated and two leads are used, or the thermistor may be placed in series with the resistance chain 15, 16, 17 either directly across the battery or via the ignition switch 13 of a road vehicle.
